The battle for increasing the number of gas pipelines from central Asia and Russia to western Europe has taken over from the nuclear arms race of the 1980s as today’s defining political game between east and west.
Russia’s ambition is to increase the number of supply routes to western Europe, while western Europe’s ambition is to increase its number of suppliers other than Russia.
