Left-wing dissidents aim to create new Progressive party
Members of the independent group of Parliamentarians, mainly formed by ex-members of the Social Democratic Party (PSD), have filed for a request to the Bucharest Courthouse to register a new political party, the National Union for Romania’s Progress (UNPR) April 2010 - From the Print Edition
Former PSD Minister of Foreign Affairs Cristian Diaconescu and current Minister of Defence Gabriel Oprea are expected to be leading public figures of the new party, which will be formed of many current independents from the Senate and the Chamber of Deputies.
The court will first discuss this request on 17 May. Senator Liviu Campanu said that the ‘Progressives’ are working on the new centre-left party’s manifesto. The colours of the party will be white and red – those of the European Socialist Group in the European Parliament. The party logo will will be formed of a shield with a hawk holding a cross in its beak.
“I hope to succeed together with some of my colleagues to set up a centre-left wing party in order to bring to Romanian voters another proposition of making politics,” said Diaconescu. “In order to have political attitude it is necessary to belong to a group, it is not an obligation but an option.”
The party is also supported by Bucharest’s Sector 2 mayor Neculae Ontanu.
