Risking a bet on second-hand jets
An economising Romania is looking to buy used fighter jets by the end of 2009 to defend its NATO border - but is this option truly cheap and effective? Asks Ana Maria Nitoi October 2009 - From the Print Edition
By the end of this year Romania must decide which new fighter jets to buy to replace its ailing fleet of Russian combat planes, as part of a NATO state member’s obligations to modernise its military equipment.
Since joining the defence bloc in 2004, the country has been forced to buy combat jets which can be used as fighter aircraft and for ground attacks to defend itself, its NATO allies and the eastern border of the organisation.
