Healthcare co-payments put back to July 2011
December 2010 - From the Print Edition
Romania’s Government aims to ask patients to pay for heathcare from July 2011, although the draft law still needs Parliamentary debate. Patients will make payments through health cards and the annual contribution of each Romanian will be 139 Euro. The system will be valid in hospitals, clinics and specialist doctors, but not in emergency hospitals. Mature Romanians with pensions under 162 Euro, teenagers under 18 and students under 26 will not pay any fees. The Ministry of Health says 8.6 million people - nearly half the country - will be exempt from copayments. The co-payment system, which ends Romania’s philosophy of free healthcare at the point of access, was first due to go live in mid-2010.
