Dump closures on course for EU demand
Romania will fulfill its EU obligations on landfill and - contrary to rumour - is not illegally importing mafia trash from Naples, argues Silvian Ionescu, chief commissioner of the National Environment Guard February 2011 - From the Print Edition
Under European Union obligations, Romania had to close 78 non-compliant municipal landfills by 16 July 2009 - but has managed to shut down only 19.
Fortunately, the country is not alone among EU states failing to conform to Brussels’ demands, and has won a four-year exemption period.
In return, the country must reduce by 50 per cent the 1995 levels of landfill waste by 2013 – or face the wrath of the EU.
