EnvironMin tops absorption rates, but implementation slack
March 2011 - From the Print Edition
Romania tops the EU in signing large-scale environment project agreements using EU funds, as it has approved projects worth 3.8 billion Euro between 2007 and 2011. However, the implementing and absorption of funds by the local authorities is still unsatisfying, according to Laszlo Borbely, Environment Minister. “All leaders from local authorities need to be informed and to work together to start investing as soon as possible,” he says. Recently the Environment Ministry has signed four contracts for investments in local environment infrastructure from EU funds, worth in total 288 million Euro. This money will be used for modernising the district heating system in the city of Botosani, water and wastewater system in Buzau and Timis counties and integrated waste management in Neamt county.
