Maramures garlic jam bets on Bucharest
Farming entrepreneurs from Maramures travel 12 hours by train from Romania’s remotest region to Bucharest in search of a market for high-class products - such as garlic and red onion jam, honey wine and Mangalitsa sausages. Report by Nicoleta Banila March 2011 - From the Print Edition
Adela Pop’s family of four sisters, seven children, nine grandchildren and neighbours can turn anything into jam - roses, clementines, chili, white pepper, sweet red onion and garlic.
They work at a 60 hectare-farm in Baia Mare, Maramures county, producing 100 jams a day.
The local market is not an option for them, as people do not buy jams in the far north, because each home makes its own products.
