Gov votes on whether to grant free hand to kill dogs
Local councils could have the freedom to kill stray dogs under a new law, as MPs from the Committee for Public Administration Territorial Planning decide whether local councils should solve the issue of stray dogs in the best manner they see fit

Prefect of Bucharest Mihai Atanasoaiei has spoken in favour of euthanising stray dogs in Bucharest, while the Mayor of Bucharest Sorin Oprescu has stated this is not a viable solution.
Due to protests by animal rights groups, MPs have sent back the law project to the Commission for revision by the end of April.
However local councils may still have a free hand to euthanise stray dogs if they consider that this is the best option for public health.
The law also calls for the establishment of a registry of all dogs in the country, including strays and those which are owned.
Bucharest has between 20,000 and 50,000 stray dogs and an estimated 400,000 dogs owned by its citizens.
Last year, over 13,000 people were attacked by dogs in Bucharest, including 2,500 children.
