Wikileaks: Basescu stated EADS contract “corrupt”
President Traian Basescu told US Embassy staff that a billion-Euro contract with Franco-German aerospace firm EADS to secure the borders of Romania was “corrupt” and “almost wholly redundant”, alleges a US Cable published through Wikileaks from 2005 May 2011 - From the Print Edition
In the cable, US Embassy staff are venting their frustration at non-transparent tenders for public procurement and privatisation deals which took place under the premiership of Adrian Nastase from 2000 to 2004.
In 2004, EADS signed a long-term contract worth over one billion Euro with the Romanian Ministry of Administration and Internal Affairs to provide an integrated solution for border surveillance and security – a necessary component for Romania’s European Union integration ambitions.
In the cable, staff note that the border surveillance contract issued without tender to EADS is “being closely scrutinised” and that President Basescu informed the Embassy’s Charge d’Affaires: “the contract was corrupt (as we suspected) and almost wholly redundant”.
