Exclusive    Wizz Air’s passengers will pay some EUR 6 more for a ticket after the relocation to Otopeni

Low-cost Hungarian airline representatives in Romania said they would move the flights to Otopeni, as it was already announced and, according to their officials, the movement represent 25 percent increased of airport taxes to be paid by the airline, a cost which will be mirrored in an average price ticket majoration of around 4 percent, representing EUR 6, Mike Powell, CFO Wizz Air stated today.

February 2012

“Wizz Air is being forced to leave from Baneasa airport, though we tried to resist the measure. In deed, we would have preferred a longer-time notice from authorizations regarding the movement measures to Otopeni,” said Mike Powell, CFO Wizz Air. Also, the official said that Bucharest is the first city where Wizz Air had to move the low-cost flights to a primary city airport. “In all other city, it is the other way around. We are searching for the best rapport for offer and demand that is why we are operating from secondary airports, where the low-costs airlines are usually operating, “Powell told The Diplomat-Bucharest. The measure, according to the official disrupts the correct competivemenss of airlines on the ground at Otopeni, where there is a monopol of the airline and fuel provider.
For Romania, which represents a quarter of Wizz Air’s total business, the air line plans to attain 12 million passengers in 2012, 1 million more compared with previous year. Also, the company will invest EUR 100 million this year for acquiring two more A320 aircrafts, doubling the current flight capacity from Bucharest and covering around 22 destinations, compared with 18 destinations in 2011. Also, starting this year, Wizz Ar will operate 123 flights weekly, 53 more flights compared with previous year.
The company’s main competitor in Romania is Blue Air, with a market share of 26.2 percent, while Wizz Air attains a market share of 66.4 percent within the low cost market, according to data provided by the company. In CEE region, the Hungarian company has a market share of 37.7 percent, competing with low-cost flight companies as Ryanair, easyjet, Germanwings and others.
The low cost airlines were notified to move their flights to the International Airport Henri Coanda - Otopeni starting March 25, with a new schedule of flights for the summer, according to Bucharest Airports Company spokesperson. The representative said that the estimations regarding the additional costs per passenger is estimated at EUR 4.5, representing the fee paid by the low cost airlines operating from the Otopeni airport. Currently, the Baneasa airport hosts the operations of several low-cost airlines including Blue Air, Wizz Air, German Wings and Vueling. Baneasa airport’s Terminal C was modernized in late 2011 and by 2013, once the other terminal will be ready, the airport will only host business flights.
