EC keeps Romania under close surveillance
President Traian Basescu last month met the President of the European Commission, Jose Manuel Barroso, the European Commissioner of Justice, Viviane Reding, and President of European Council, Herman Van Rompyui, on an official visit to Brussels, to discuss Romania's current issues. The discussions were held behind closed doors, but President Basescu made a statement after the meeting.

"All three [of the EC politicians] raised concerns about justice and its independence, in response to recent statements about justice that actually became attacks," the President said, referring to the Social Liberal Union's MEPs, who have accused Reding of siding with the Democrat Liberals on many occasions.
