New airport on Romania's map: Brasov-Ghimbav International Airport

2012-11-21 15:18:44

The long-awaited airport in the central county of Brasov has received the go-ahead, the Brasov County Council has signed the building contract for the Brasov-Ghimbav International airport runway with local construction firm Vectra Service. Valued at 13 million Euro, the works for the construction of the runway are expected to start in the spring of 2013, according to the vice-president of the County Council, Mihai Pascu. "The execution period provided by the contract is ten months and a half," said Pascu. The runway, destined to receive medium-haul planes, will be 2,820 metres long and 45 metres wide. Brasov has long missed an infrastructure project of this scale, with Pascu saying the opening of the airport in Ghimbav is likely to increase the investment potential of the area, mainly in the tourism industry, as well as new development opportunities for small and medium-sized companies. The bid for the construction of the terminal that will service the airport is expected to take place in January 2014, so that the airport can be operational at the end of 2014 or early 2015, according to Pascu. The runway will remain state-owned, while the terminal will belong to the private investor who will win the bid. Vectra Service has posted a turnover of 66 million Euro in 2011, according to the Ministry of Finance.
