USL agrees on proposed amendments to Constitution

June 2013 - From the Print Edition

Leaders of the Social Liberal Union (USL) have agreed on their suggested amendments to the Constitution, with their proposals due to be submitted to the Commission for the Revision of the Constitution, according to Mediafax. One of the amendments is that the party that wins the largest number of seats at the parliamentary elections put forward the candidate to become Prime Minister, with the President of the State left to formally name the Prime Minister. The dissolution of Parliament will be possible only if a referendum to dismiss the President fails and only if the dismissal proposal by the Parliament attracts more votes against than in favor.

In further suggest amendments, the Prime Minister would get the power of representation at European Union meetings, unless the topics under discussion relate to issues of European Union security and foreign policy. The President's mandate would last four years, as would the Parliament's mandate, but the elections would not coincide.

The Democratic Union of Hungarians in Romania (UDMR) has agreed on its own suggested amendments to the Constitution, among them a constitutional clause that allows the possibility of legislative regulation of the cultural autonomy and the establishment of regions with special statute. Prime Minister Victor Ponta said that the referendum for the constitutional change must take place no later than the end of October.
