35 local firms make Deloitte CE Top 500
Romania was ranked fifth by the number of companies in Deloitte’s Central Europe Top 500, released in September, in which the most important companies from 18 European countries were analyzed and ranked by revenues from sales reported last year

The combined revenues of the 35 largest local companies amounted to almost EUR 39 billion at the end of last year, compared to EUR 39.6 billion in 2011, according to the study. "2012 has been a difficult year both for Romania and for the Central European region. However, Romania maintained its position in the ranking, despite its lower number of companies," Ahmed Hassan, Deloitte Romania Managing Partner, said.
However, the 2013 list of the largest firms in Romania comes as no surprise to Deloitte Romania's Hassan, dominated by the energy & resources industry, with 14 companies. "OMV Petrom has been number one for seven years now, while Rompetrol Rafinarie, now in second place [up one place since 2012] has been in the top three for six years," he told The Diplomat-Bucharest.
The E&R sector is followed by consumer business and transportation (with 10 companies), manufacturing (6), technology, media and telecommunication (4) and life sciences and healthcare (1). In addition, this year there are five new entries, compared to four in 2012: Electrica Furnizare, Ford Romania, Dedeman, Samsung Electronics and CE Oltenia.
In 2012, Romania had 37 firms in the list compared to 35 this year. Moreover, seven businesses that appeared in last year's list are missing this year: Michelin Romania, Electrocentrala Bucuresti, Cargill Romania, RCS&RDS, Celestica Romania, CFR Calatori and Nokia. "Romanian companies dropped out not necessarily because they did something, but because other companies in the region are doing very well," says Hassan. "Next year, several major companies may re-enter the ranking."
Deloitte, which provides audit, tax, consulting, and financial advisory services, has been present on the local market since 1992.
