Traian Basescu wants Schengen accession by October

"Of course, I also invited the EC President, who will end his mandate approximately at the same time as me, to endorse Romania's objective to join Schengen, as he did in 2012, when the target was missed due to the events of the summer of 2012," Basescu stated, following the meeting.
In November last year, the EU chief, Jose Manuel Barroso, told a French TV show that Romania and Bulgaria could not expect to enter the Schengen area in January 2014. "It is an incredible amalgamation between Schengen, immigration, Lampedusa and foreign workers, an amalgamation that should be denounced before extremist happenings impact European countries. Regarding Romania and Bulgaria′s accession to Schengen, it cannot happen on January 1 next year because there are countries opposed to this," said the EC president at that time.
