The amount of local taxes paid directly by credit card over the internet increased in the first two months of this year by 52 per cent compared to the same period of 2014, reaching more than ten million RON, which represents over 40 per cent of the amounts paid online in full 2014, according to data reported by Visa Europe member banks in Romania within a press release issued to The Diplomat – Bucharest. Thus, taxpayers have made in the first two months of this year nearly 40,000 online tax payments to local authorities, up 49 per cent over the same period in 2014. The Internet allows taxpayers to pay their taxes anytime and anywhere and thus avoid any queues at counters or costs relating to the withdrawal of cash from ATMs, the release also read.
"We salute the interest of local authorities and taxpayers to pay taxes online," said Catalin Cretu, regional director for Romania, Croatia and Slovenia of Visa Europe. "We support the payment of local taxes by card since 2009 and we are glad to see that the efforts of all parties involved bear fruit and improve the experience of taxpayers in interacting with local authorities." Cretu went on to add that the www.ghiseul.ro platform registered 65,000 active users, a 30 per cent increase compared with about 50,000 active accounts recorded earlier this year. Furthermore, the release stated also that the development of online payment transactions of local taxes was supported in recent years by the constant increase in terms of number of municipalities which provide to taxpayers the option to pay online. Late last year, more than 110 municipalities accepted online payment of local taxes by www.ghiseul.ro or their platforms.
