Romania has managed to halve emissions of greenhouse gases in recent years
Romania has managed to halve its emissions of greenhouse gases in recent years, although global climatic changes continues to affect the country with extremely high temperatures, said the Minister of Environment, Water and Forests, Gratiela Gavrilescu, during a mid-July conference meant to present the "European Environment - State and Outlook 2015” (SOER 2015) report, compiled by the European Environment Agency (EEA) 2015-08-05 00:04:29 - From the Print Edition
"It is enough to imagine what the quality of life would be in the European Union in the absence of rigorous environmental measures and in the context of constant economic growth!" said Gavrilescu, quoted by Agerpres. "It is obvious that, without a strong political agenda, such as that of the European Union, environmental pressures would be devastating, with the strongest impact on ecosystems and human health (...) Romania, as a member state, is rallied around all these policies. The results that our country has accumulated in recent years are also validated by the European Environment Agency report. We managed a decrease in emissions of greenhouse gases by almost half, as we also managed to diminish the harmful effects of other air pollutants: sulphur dioxide emissions, which fell by about 48 per cent, or NOx emissions, down almost 30 per cent. Recently, the Ministry of Environment has promoted a government decision to support local authorities in developing and implementing air quality plans. We are concerned with reducing the impact of PM10 in crowded urban areas of the country, in order not to expose the population to any risk," she added.
