Basescu tipped to face Geoana or Antonescu

Even though President Basescu has not publicly announced his intention to run in this autumn’s election for head of state, he continues to lead with 35 per cent of Romanians’ voting intentions, according to a recent Galllup poll.

June 2009 - From the Print Edition

With this result, Basescu would not have a majority, which means he would need to enter into a second round of voting against one of his opponents. He is followed by Social Democratic leader (PSD) Mircea Geoana and Liberal President (PNL) Crin Antonescu, both on 19 per cent. Prince Radu of Romania is give ten per cent, the extreme right wing Greater Romania Party (PRM) leader Corneliu Vadim Tudor nine per cent and Hungarian Union (UDMR) head Marko Bela three per cent.
If Vadim Tudor is elected President, he will appoint billionaire George Becali to the post of Prime Minister. The two politicians started their cooperation at the beginning of April, when the financier of Steaua Football Club agreed to run on the PRM’s list for the Euro-Parliamentary elections this month.
“Becali and I make a very strong couple,” said Vadim Tudor. “We are like the two heroes in fairy-tales who lean their backs up against one another.”
Israeli businessman Nati Meir has also decided to stand in this year’s presidential election as an independent.
Born to Romanian parents, Meir received Romanian citizenship in 1999 and has been both a member of the PRM and the Democratic Party (PD). He launched his campaign with a belly-dancing show, where he showed his admiration for the contortions of the performers by thrusting bank-notes between their breasts.
Meir’s spokesperson is Monica Columbeanu, a model who became famous by marrying a millionaire 30 years old than herself and starring in a TV reality show about their life together.
