During the economic crisis and widely-publicised racial tension between some Romanians and Italians, the size of the Romanian community in Italy increased by 100,000 in 2008 compared to the previous year.
Before Romania joined the European Union in January 2007, there were about 150,000 Romanians officially living in the peninsular.
“This number exploded once Romania became an EU member,” Italy’s Ambassador to Romania, Mario Cospito, tells The Diplomat.
