Minister of Environment: Vacaresti Lake declared natural park and protected natural area

Vacaresti Lake was declared a natural park and a protected area regime was established there, announced Cristiana Pasca - Palmer, the Minister of Environment, Water and Forests, in mid-May, in a briefing at Victoria Palace, quoted by Agerpres

2016-06-15 22:37:06 - From the Print Edition

"After four years, this Government, at the proposal of the Ministry of Environment, Water and Forests, has approved today [11 May], within the Government meeting, the Government Decision declaring Vacaresti Lake as a natural park and thus the status of protected natural area is established," said the Minister. "Vacaresti Lake thus becomes the first urban park in Continental Europe (...) and also the first urban park in Romania," she added.
The Minister said that the new protected area covers an area of 186 hectares. "This so-called mini-delta or delta between blocks (...) is a space that was left unfinished for 25 years," said Pasca – Palmer. "An aquatic ecosystem has been created there, where, at the present, we have over 90 species of fauna and flora; it is a migration station for birds and, because of this rich biodiversity, it took a scientific specialised study approved by the Romanian Academy to declare this park. (…) It is really a green lung of the Capital to fight a bit the climate change and greenhouse gases," she added. Out of the 186 hectares of Vacaresti natural park, only six are privately owned.
