Corn to energy refinery powers up in Teleorman county
Romanian agricultural holding company Inter Agro group has opened a 70 million Euro bioethanol refinery in Zimnicea, Teleorman county December 2009 - From the Print Edition
At full capacity, the plant can have a production of 100,000 tonnes of bioethanol per year, which will be processed from 300,000 tonnes of Inter Agro’s own corn. The group will sell bioethanol to petrol retailers in Romania.
Since last July, all petrol products sold in Romanian gas stations must contain four per cent bioethanol, due to EU regulations. The EU is likely to increase this proportion to 20 per cent by 2020.
Inter Agro spent an additional 15 million Euro to build a 12-MW natural gas-fired power plant next to the refinery, which is using half of the electricity generated. The remaining electricity from the gas-fired power plant will enter into the national grid. InterAgro estimates to make a recovery on this investment in three to six years.
