Court orders wood-panel maker to close factory
Alba County’s Sebes court has ordered Austria’s wood panel manufacturers Kronospan to demolish one of its three plants in Romania, after it declared that the firm had failed to acquire the correct permits to build December 2009 - From the Print Edition
This unit, which produces formaldehyde-based chemical substances for the production of wood panel boards, has been the target of an ongoing civil society campaign.
The magistrates took the decision after Kronospan decided to build the plant in 2007 without acquiring first an environmental or a building permit.
With its two plants in Sebes and a factory worth 200 million Euro in Brasov, the company is the largest wood panel boards manufacturer in south-east Europe.
Local authorities and NGOs have been fighting the company in court for more than two years to stop the firm’s chemical operations. Without proper oversight in its industrial use, Formaldehyde can contribute to provoking cancer, according to the World Health Organisation.
According to NGO Sebes Independent Centre for Environmental Protection, Sebes registers the highest number of cancer patients in Romania.
The company refused to express its position. It was unclear, when The Diplomat went to press, whether the court’s decision was final.
