Dragos Preda, Secretary of State at Ministry of Transport, Infrastructure and Communication said at Cybersecurity Online Forum organized today by Financial Intelligence: “The development and implementation of 5G networks at national level demands a significant work amount and the EU work frame comes to support this endeavor and it needs to enable the development of certification schemes for cyber security.

The development of 5G needs a unitary approach among all EU states and regarding this, the member states had to evaluate the security risks and liabilities at national level. The 5G networks will create tremendous opportunities at the level of EU member states, especially in the field of innovation. In Romania, work groups, think tanks emulated a strong energy effort around the Governmental endeavors and digitalization processes.

In January this year, the European Commission endorsed a set of measures to mitigate cybersecurity risks related to the rollout of 5G networks. The European Commission also set out a number of next steps, to implement the toolbox. The EU Agency for Cybersecurity played a supporting role in the delivery of the 5G toolbox. Last year, the EU Agency for Cybersecurity also supported the EU Member States with developing an EU-wide joint risk assessment regarding the 5G roll out, and delivered a 5G threat landscape report, which analyses threats at a more technical level. All three items the joint risk assessment, the threat landscape and the toolbox are implementing what was requested by the European Commission in the recommendation on 5G cybersecurity of March of last year.
