Transelectrica invests 42 million Euro in the refurbishment of two substations in Western Romania
Transelectrica announces that the investment project to complete the 400 kV Banat Axis, part of the 400 kV Ring of Romania, marks important progress through the refurbishment of two key stations: Resita and Timisoara. These investments, with a total value of approximately 42 million euros, will make it possible to close the 400 kV Ring of Romania in the western area, a strategic project for the security of the country’s electricity supply and for the consolidation of the electricity transmission network and of the interconnection with the networks of the neighboring states. With the completion of the 400 kV Oradea Sud-Nadab Overhead Power Line section, in 2020, the degree of achievement of the 400 kV Ring of Romania reached is 70%.
Catalin Nitu, President of CNTEE Transelectrica SA, said: “The refurbishment of Timisoara station and Resita station is currently two investment priorities for the completion of the 400 kV Ring in the western area, along with the completion of approximately 340 kilometers of overhead power line. of 400 kV from the Banat Axis. Romania needs a modernized, reliable energy infrastructure, able to integrate new renewable energy production capacities, therefore the closure of the Ring is a fundamental project for the operational safety of the National Electric Power System. After almost 4 years of blockages, we managed to resume the works in Resita Station, a station with a special role in the western part of the country, which we consider a success, given that this investment will lead to both strengthening the network in the western area , especially will create the necessary premises for interconnection with Serbia. Increasing the degree of interconnection plays an important role in Romania’s security of electricity supply and contributes to achieving the targets set at European level. “
The refurbishment project of the Timisoara substation is in a mature stage of execution, the deadline for completion of the works being 2024. The investment, worth about 18 million Euro, is a complex one and aims at both refurbishing the existing 110 kV substation and the construction of a new substation with a voltage of 400 kV that will allow the implementation of the project to switch to the voltage of 400 kV of the Iron Gates – Resita – Timisoara – Sacălaz – Arad (400 kV Banat Axis), a strategic objective of the Development Plan of the Electric Transmission Network 2020-2029.
This line also includes the investment in the refurbishment of Resita Station, a key objective both for the commercial operationalization of the 400 kV interconnection line with Serbia Resita (RO) -Pancevo (RS) and for the transition to 400 kV voltage of the Axis. Banat. The contract for the execution of the works was signed at the end of 2020, and the first command meeting within this project was organized last week, and in the following period the order to start the works on the site will be given. The refurbishment of the Reșița station, a blocked investment since 2017, has a value of approximately 24 million Euro and will be completed in 2023.
The 400 kV ring is a set of 400 kV overhead power lines in the electricity transmission network, with a length of approximately 1,796 kilometers, which are already completed, are under construction or will be built according to the RET Development Plan on 10 years of CNTEE Transelectrica SA.
