Corina Popescu, CEO of Electrica, has been appointed Vice President of Eurelectric
Corina Popescu, CEO of Electrica, was elected Vice President of Eurelectric, a union representing over 3,500 companies in the production, distribution, and supply of electricity in the European Union.
Corina Popescu will be part of the team of the newly elected President of Eurelectric – Jean Bernard Levy, CEO of the French utility group EDF, and will hold the position of Vice President, along with Leonhard Birnbaum, CEO of the electricity supply company E.ON Germany.
“The presence in the management of one of the most prestigious and important unions representing the energy sector at European level is a great honour for me, but also a great responsibility. Eurelectric is the European Commission’s main dialogue partner for the energy sector, and the union’s leadership represents the interests of all its members. The presence of a Romanian in the management of Eurelectric puts Romania on the map of the most important actors in this field at community level.
Climate change is no longer just a scientific debate, and its negative effects can be seen in our daily lives. That is why I believe that people are aware of the need for immediate action to combat climate change. In the face of a process aimed at the sustainable development of the society in which we live, informing the population is of major importance, especially in countries that are not economically strong enough to support a smooth transition. The ambitious environmental goals of the European Environment Pact can only be achieved through a joint effort and a continuous exchange of experience between the states that have joined the Green Deal and are committed to putting their own economies and societies on a sustainable path,” said Corina Popescu following her election on the board of Eurelectric.
Eurelectric’s mission, considered the European Commission’s main partner on energy issues, is to contribute to the development and increase the competitiveness of the electricity industry and to ensure an efficient representation of the industry among strategic partners and to promote the role of a low-carbon energy mix in the evolution of society.
Corina Popescu holds the position of General Manager of Electrica for a period of 4 years, starting with 2019, previously holding the position of General Manager of the Electricity Distribution Company Muntenia Nord, part of the Electrica Group. Since 2007, she has been working in the private sector within the E.ON Romania Group and the OMV Petrom Group. Between 2015 and 2017, Corina Popescu held the position of Secretary of State in the Ministry of Energy, during which time she was also part of the Board of Directors of Electrica SA. Starting with May 1, 2017, she was appointed to the Transelectrica Board of Directors, and between June 2017 and April 2018 she was the President of the Transelectrica Board of Directors.
