Romania’s Green Group is investing 12 million Euro in a production line in Slovakia
Green Group announces a 12 million Euro investment in Slovakia for the installation of a recycled PET (r-PET) plastic granule production line with a total capacity of 8,000 tonnes per year. In Romania, Green Group has been producing r-PET granules since 2015, with an annual installed capacity of 11,000 tons. This type of granules is a sustainable alternative to the production of plastic packaging for the food and non-food industry, with a carbon footprint of up to 60% reduced compared to virgin granules, made from oil.
“Our vision is to become the largest PET recycler and producer of r-PET granules in Europe, with a strong sustainability component. Municipal waste is a renewable local resource that must be recycled locally to reduce the CO2 emissions associated with the waste transport supply chain. Therefore, the proximity of the resource with the recycling industry is a key element for obtaining the circular economy of PET and is the direction we are pursuing in the expansion of the company at European level “, said Constantin Damov, President of Green Group.
Green Group entered the Slovak market in 2019, following a 13 million euro transaction, for the acquisition of the local company Ekolumi. With the new investment, the rebranding process of Ekolumi is completed, which becomes Green Tech Slovakia, thus marking the assimilation of the company in the PET recycling division within the group, Green Tech. At present, Green Tech Slovakia is the largest PET recycler in the country, with an installed processing capacity of 40,000 tons of PET per year.
According to the European Single Use Plastics Directive (SUP Directive), packaging manufacturers are required to integrate 25% recycled plastic in the composition of beverage packaging by 2025 and 30% by 2030, which has boosted demand for r-PET granules in European level.
Made from 100% PET flakes resulting from the recycling process, r-PET granules can replace virgin granules in the plastic production process, with superior sustainability benefits: 60% less CO2 emissions, less energy used in production , less natural resources consumed and less waste in landfills.
Green Tech is one of the most important recyclers for PET waste in Europe, with an annual processing capacity of 150,000 tons of PET, with operations in Romania, Slovakia and Lithuania. It is also the first gold-certified recycling company in Europe to issue voluntary carbon credits resulting from recycling.
