International Data Science WiDS Datathon competition to be hosted by Romania on February 5
Romania will host, for the first time, on February 5, 2022, the international academic competition in the field of “data science” – “Women in Data Science (WiDS) Datathon Workshop” – organized by Think Thank 360 under the auspices of Stanford University US. The competition precedes the World Conference on Women in Data Science (WiDS) on March 7, 2022, and will bring to the forefront teams that want to hone their skills in the field of data science, reaching more than 100,000 data enthusiasts from over 85 countries.
The competition is supported by Wolters Kluwer Romania, strategic partner, in collaboration with the Bucharest Academy of Economic Studies, academic partner and Sibiu University of Forces, academic partner Central Region, supported by the United States Embassy in Romania.
The competition in Bucharest will feature Romanian teams from academia, private and government that will compete, internationally, with teams of professionals with a tradition in the field of data science. This year’s theme of the competition is climate change and green energy, and the data made available to competitors was gathered with input from Climate Change AI (CCAI), Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory (Berkeley Lab), US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and MIT Critical Data. The winners of this international competition, as well as the national ranking, will be announced at the WiDS Conference “Women in Data Science” Romania, on March 7.
“We are grateful to Think Tank 360 and their partners for bringing WiDS Datathon to Romania,” said Judy Logan, Co-Director of the Women in Data Science (WiDS) Initiative at Stanford University. “WiDS Datathon enables participants to hone their skills in data science by responding to the challenges of mitigating the negative impact of climate change,” concluded Judy Logan. In her turn, Mariana Ungureanu, founder of Think Thank 360, stated: “It is a real honor and a privilege to organize this international competition in Bucharest. Thus, we put Romania on the map of the world avant-garde in data science and show the potential that our country has in this field. This year’s theme is very current and important, because global climate change and its impact on life have become one of the biggest challenges of our generation. “
Climate change is one of the biggest challenges of our era because of the danger it poses to the entire planet, and researching large volumes of data is a great opportunity to identify solutions that facilitate the scientific management of climate problems.
