Kaufland reduced its carbon footprint by 1,400 tonnes for its supply chain in 2021
The results achieved by Kaufland Romania, which in 2021 were also based on a sustainability strategy, have earned the company, for the second consecutive year, the sustainability certificate from CHEP Romania, the leader in the rental of reusable pallets.
In 2021, Kaufland reduced its carbon footprint by 1,400 tonnes for the supply chain, 10% more than in 2020, and the amount of waste generated decreased by 35% to almost 160,000 kg. In terms of forest protection, last year Kaufland saved more than 1,400,000 dm³ of wood, 24% more than the year before.
With these results, Kaufland strenghtens its position among the leading companies in the FMCG industry in Romania regarding the transition to the circular economy, having one of the most sustainable supply chains.
The performance was made possible with the help of the services provided by CHEP, which offers for rent pallets for transporting products in a system based on circular economy principles. The use of CHEP blue pallets instead of traditional white wood pallets results in an optimisation of resource consumption and a reduction in pollution and waste, out of environmental concerns.
For this certificate, calculations were performed using the RDC IS014044 methodology, in line with the European Life Cycle Analysis study, by comparing the sustainable model of reuse by rental of CHEP pallets versus the use of classic white pallets. Life Cycle Analysis is a method of assessing the environmental impact of a product during its life cycle.
