Kaufland publishes the results of the socio-economic impact of its activity in Romania
Kaufland maintains its position in the top of the largest retail companies in Romania, by turnover, and continues to be one of the most important private employers, according to the socio-economic impact study of the company for the financial year 2023, prepared by KPMG.
The impact of Kaufland in the Romanian economy In the financial year 2023, Kaufland had a total contribution of 2.57 billion euros (Gross Added Value – GVA) to the local economy, which represents 0.9% of Romania’s GDP. Investments in Romania
Last year, Kaufland invested 177 million euros in Romania in terms of CAPEX, more precisely, for the purchase of fixed assets. In addition, it had a contribution to the state budget of 282 million euros, through fees and taxes.
New jobs
Kaufland is one of the largest private employers in Romania, with 17,200 employees, of which around 14,350 are full-time employees. The salary scale and benefits package are constantly improved, in 2023, the minimum net salary at Kaufland exceeds the national minimum net salary by 56%. Through its activity, the company generated more than 105,600 full-time jobs in Romania, directly, indirectly and induced, equivalent to approximately 2.1% of the national workforce. The impact study shows that each Kaufland direct employee in Romania supports the employment of more than 6 people in the entire Romanian economy, by creating new jobs.
From every 1 euro spent at the checkout, 65 cents go to local suppliers
Kaufland supports partnerships with local businesses. Thus, in 2023, the company collaborated with over 2,500 suppliers and approximately 79% of the total expenses with suppliers were allocated to local partners, exceeding the value of 2.83 billion euros. At the same time, 65 cents from every euro spent at Kaufland cash registers go directly to businesses in Romania.
The company recorded a turnover of 3.74 billion euros (March 2023 – February 2024), thanks to the efforts made to remain the preferred shopping destination of Romanians.

9.7 million euros invested in projects for the community
Last year, Kaufland was involved in the development and implementation of social responsibility projects worth 9.7 million euros, including two financing programs through which Kaufland offers non-refundable grants to non-governmental organizations. The company is among the biggest supporters of NGOs fighting for causes such as health, environmental protection, education, healthy living and sports or culture.
The socio-economic impact of Kaufland’s activity in Romania
The amount of fiscal contributions recorded by Kaufland in 2023 could finance more than 9.4 million medical consultations, given an average cost of 30 euros per consultation borne by CNSAS. These contributions would also support the construction of hospitals with a total of approximately 1,900 beds, reflecting the company’s significant impact in the medical sector. At the same time, Kaufland pays enough taxes to finance the education of around 140,000 students, given an average annual cost of 2000 euros per student, including staff salaries and other expenses. These data underline the crucial role that Kaufland’s contributions play in supporting the essential health and education systems in Romania.
