Energy Minister Burduja: “Work on the new 1,700 MW gas power plant in Mintia is progressing at an accelerated pace, the turbines have already been delivered”
Energy Minister Sebastian Burduja says the 1,700 MW Mintia gas-fired power plant project, which should be completed in 2026, is advancing at an accelerated pace.
“One of the most important investments in the energy sector is the large gas-fired power plant in Mintia. 1.4 billion euros, 1700 MW of installed power. It will be the largest plant of this type in the European Union. The commissioning date is 2026, and field work is progressing at an accelerated pace. The turbines, the largest of this type in the country, have already been delivered. Transgaz is working on the main line that will connect the future thermal power plant to the national gas transmission system. Together with the Secretary General of the Government, Mircea Abrudean, we had a meeting at the Government headquarters with the investors, reviewing the status of the works and approvals, as well as the measures we can take together to ensure the timely completion of this strategic investment objective “, Minister of Energy, Sebastian Burduja, wrote on his LinkedIn page.
“At Mintia, from 2027, we expect to deliver Romanian gas from the Black Sea. Therefore, we will have more energy production in the band, therefore safe, at a competitive price and “greener” than coal-based production (at Mintia, the former thermal power plant was based on this type of resource). Plus jobs and local development. It is exactly the kind of project that we want quickly realized for all Romanians, and more energy produced in the country will mean lower bills for households and greater competitiveness for the Romanian private sector. Before, together”, Burduja also wrote.
The old Mintia coal-fired thermal power plant, stopped in the meantime, was bought, in August 2022, for 91.23 million euros, excluding VAT, by Mass Global Energy Rom, part of the Mass Group Holding group, in a public auction, according to e-nergia.ro The power plant entered insolvency proceedings on November 14, 2019 and into conservation in the summer of 2021, in the absence of the necessary investments to be able to comply with the environmental regulations of the European Union.
The investor has undertaken the commissioning of a new gas-fired plant with a capacity of up to 1,700 MW, which would become the largest new gas-fired plant in Europe, after a total investment of €1.3 billion.
