Karoly Borbely, CEO of Hidroelectrica: “In 2025 we want to exceed 500 million euros in investments”

Hidroelectrica, the largest energy producer in Romania, has an investment plan of over 500 million euros in 2025, said CEO Karoly Borbely at the ZF Power Summit 2025.
“Last year we managed to sign projects worth over 300 million euros. This year we plan to exceed 500 million euros – here I am referring to investments, retrofits, modernizations, maintenance works and M&A: acquisitions, developments of production sources, renewable energy and batteries (…) We continue with investments in retrofitting, these will influence prices at some point”, Borbely stated.
“We must continue the investment works in production capacities. Coal must be replaced with hydro, nuclear and gas, only in this way will we have a high-performance energy system and only in this way will prices fall more steadily.
We are on schedule with investments, we manage to do most of the maintenance with the companies in the group, Hidroserv and UCM Reşiţa. It is a very good thing, but we must continue to invest in equipment, new machinery, etc.
We are a connected market, in which any sensitivity at a regional level affects us, we suffer a little in Romania because we do not have enough capacities. Last year, over 1,200 MW were put into production, we must maintain and increase this pace of putting new capacities into production – not only renewables, but especially those in the band. These will dramatically influence energy prices in the medium and long term.”
