Romania strengthens cooperation with Canada in the nuclear field
Energy Minister Virgil Popescu and H.E Canadian Ambassador to Romania Annick Goulet, on behalf of the Canadian Minister of Mineral Resources, Seamus O’Regan Jr., signed the Memorandum of Understanding between the Romanian Ministry of Energy and the Canadian Department of Natural Resources on strengthening cooperation in the field of Civil Nuclear Energy. The memorandum was signed in the presence of the Prime Minister of Romania Florin Citu.
The signed Memorandum strengthens the cooperation between Canada and Romania in the field of nuclear energy because the Canadian industry has an exceptional experience in CANDU projects and has already successfully completed renovation works and new projects for the construction of CANDU units. At the same time, considering the experience in CANDU projects, the Canadian partners will be involved in the nuclear-energy projects in Cernavoda and in those in the civil nuclear energy sector in Romania.
“I am glad that in our project of modernization and construction of new nuclear reactors, in addition to the partners from the USA and France, we are joined by the Canadian partners, with whom we have a very good and long collaboration in this field. By signing this memorandum, we express our common interest in strengthening and further developing cooperation in nuclear energy projects. And not only that: we will try to work together to implement new technologies, which are the future of green energy. I want to thank the Canadian partners, H.E. Canadian Ambassador to Romania Annick Goulet and Canadian Minister of Mineral Resources Seamus O’Regan Jr. for support and good cooperation. At the same time, the presence of Prime Minister Florin Citu at this event demonstrates how important this project is for both states,” said Virgil Popescu, Minister of Energy.
“The memorandum signed today confirms the excellent bilateral relations that our country has with Canada. I wanted to be present at this event to show that I support the development of nuclear energy projects in Cernavoda and those in the civil nuclear energy sector in Romania. The investments are vital and I am glad that the Canadian partners are joining the American partners in order to develop the nuclear field in our country,” said the Prime Minister Florin Citu.
“Nuclear cooperation was a pillar of the 55-year relationship between Canada and Romania. I am proud to renew our bilateral commitment today by signing this Memorandum of Understanding and look forward to strengthening our trade in all areas, from security to trade,” said H.E. the Ambassador of Canada to Romania, Annick Goulet.
