Constantin Ichimoaei, ABB Romania: “We need a long-term strategy for adopting electric cars”
“I want to talk about electric mobility in three directions: car manufacturers, manufacturers and developers of charging networks for electric cars, and the impact of charging stations on electrical networks.
We must not minimize the impact that the installation of charging stations has on the electrical network. We need investments in electrical infrastructure and new substations. If in 2012 we had less than 10 electric models, for 2025 over 300 new electric and hybrid models are announced,” Constantin Ichimoaei, Executive Manager, ABB Romania said during e-Mobility Forum 2021 organized by The Diplomat-Bucharest.
“We will see rapid developments. The car market is growing. Charging station manufacturers announce much faster and more efficient products, and all these investments will have a major impact on electricity networks.
We can talk about two big barriers in adopting electric cars. First of all, we can talk about a psychological barrier: how long can I charge my car and how far can I travel with that car. We have already talked about the impact of charging stations on electricity networks.
We are the global market leader in fast charging electric vehicles, with sales of over 21,000 DC stations and over 440,000 AC stations. We started in 2014 to actively promote electric mobility in Romania.
In 2015 we also installed the first 50 kW charger in Romania.
By 2040, we expect 50% of vehicles to be autonomous. By 2030, we expect an increase in car-sharing platforms. In all the studies we have seen, a decrease in the number of car owners and a decrease in the time in which cars are parked is expected.
We need different types of charging. The new station we launched recently can offer a 3-minute charge for 100 kilometers of autonomy.
It is necessary to modernize the electrical infrastructure, especially to ensure the charging power for depots, commercial fleets, large parking lots and charging hubs.
We need to have a long-term strategy for adopting electric cars. At ABB we have 10,000 vehicles. By 2030, we aim for the entire car fleet to be composed of electric vehicles or vehicles that use alternative fuels.”
