Tenaris – a leading manufacturer and supplier of steel pipes and services for the global energy industry, industrial and low carbon applications – is celebrating 20 years in Romania, with milestones that include investments, exports and community support initiatives.
With more than 1,900 employees, Tenaris’s manufacturing footprint consists of the pipe mill in Zalău; the steel mill in Călărași; and the sucker rod mill in Câmpina, plus service centers in Ploiești and Cluj-Napoca; scrap collection centers in Popești Leordeni, Brașov and Iernut and the commercial offices in Bucharest. “On this solid foundation, the future looks promising for both our presence in Romania and the country’s industrial development, which we are proudly part of,” said Mihaela Popescu, Tenaris Area Manager East Europe, North Sea & Sub-Saharan Africa. “We’ll keep investing and innovating, aligned with our long-term commitment,” she added.
Along with its growth and evolution, through investments in the plants, exceeding 500 million USD in 20 years, in the employees, in the communities, Tenaris has transformed the former Silcotub and Calarasi facilities into a world-class operation within its global industrial system, not only serving the Romanian oil and gas industry, but also exporting over 97 percent of its production worldwide.
Tenaris in Romania, with a revenue of 836 million USD in 2023, has become an essential player, with products and services used in the energy sector, as well as for industrial applications. The company has built an important presence, for example, in the automotive industry, where it delivers both pipes and components.
Over the past two decades, Tenaris has also made significant steps in environmental protection. By incorporating Best Available Technologies and optimizing energy consumption, the company has successfully decreased CO2eq emission, positioning it amongst the TOP15 steel shops with the lowest emissions in the world. Rigorous waste management programs have been implemented, promoting circularity. These initiatives have substantially minimized industrial waste through recycling and reuse strategies, reaching a 92 percent recovery rate. The company has also started a project in Călăraşi – which should be complete by the end of 2024 – to produce solar energy, with a nominal power of 20 MW.
Tenaris is also a steadfast partner in the surrounding community, supporting it continuously throughout its first 20 years in Romania, with a dedicated focus on education. The company has invested more than $1 million per year, awarding more than 2.250 high school and universities students with Roberto Rocca scholarships, equipping technical schools, organizing industrial internships, summer camps, trainings for teachers, offering career counselling to students and also organizing volunteer actions at schools with Tenaris employees.
