Political and business justice fixing allegations widen
Judge Florin Costiniu, businessman Costel ‘Asphalt King’ Casuneanu and real estate millionaire Marius Locic have been released from prison after several days’ detention in a justice-fixing case involving Social Democrat (PSD) Senator Catalin Voicu May 2010 - From the Print Edition
High Court judge Costiniu is accused of attempting to obtain a favourable legal decision for Casuneanu’s construction firm, which contested the result of a public auction organised by the National Road and Motorway Company.
The decision to arrest Costiniu is the first time in Romanian legal history that such measure is taken against a judge of the highest Romanian court, The High Court of Cassation and Justice.
Judge Florin Costiniu admits, in a statement given to anti-corruption prosecutors, that he accepted to analyse Casuneanu’s case at the Supreme Court, but claims there was no mention of a bribe.
The judge recounted to prosecutors that Voicu told him about the file of “his very good friend” Costel Casuneanu, asking him to analyse it. Costiniu claims that Catalin Voicu had said that he wanted the judge to help Casuneanu without receiving anything in return.
Senator Voicu has been under arrest since March, accused by the anti-corruption prosecutors of taking a bribe worth 260,000 Euro from several businessmen to influence court decisions.
