Fifty AK-47s stolen and on the streets
March 2009 - From the Print Edition
Several guns including 50 AK-47 automatic rifles were stolen from a military deposit located in Ciorogarla, Ilfov county. The military authorities, including Minister of National Defence Mihai Stanisoara, confirmed that ammunition was not stolen. It is understood the guns had not been retrieved, as we went to press. It is suspected that soldiers working in the arms depository were accomplices to members of a crime network responsible for the robbery. So far 14 high-ranking military officers, including the Air Force Chief of Staff and the Chief of the Counter-Intelligence Department in the Ministry of Defence, have been dismissed by Stanisoara. An investigation revealed that it is likely the arms depository was unlocked when the robbery took place.
