Transport Ministry pledges cash to Transylvania Motorway
The Transport Ministry’s debt of 214 million Euro to US infrastructure firm Bechtel for the construction of the Transylvania Motorway in 2009 will be paid from the state budget by March, says the Ministry

Further construction works for this year will be financed through a state-guaranteed loan because there are no funds in the 2010 state budget for this project.
From the 415 km motorway planned between Brasov and Bors, at Romania’s eastern border with Hungary, only 42 km between Turda and Gilau is open for use.
The Bechtel motorway was awarded as a direct contract to the US firm in 2004, not in an open tender, which disqualified it from crucial European funding.
The project was planned to be ready by 2013, but it is estimated that it will take much longer for the motorway to be completed, while costs are expected to rise far above the original 2.4 billion Euro price tag for the motorway.
Meanwhile the Government has set as priority for 2010 infrastructure projects that can be financed with European Union funds, which should not theoretically include the Bechtel project.
Romania’s Government has budgeted 380 million Euro for the construction of motorways this year.
