Romania plan to sell CO2 to fund coal-power

Romania is considering selling the right to release 150 million tonnes of CO2 into the atmosphere to another country, said Minister of Economy Adriean Videanu. About 250 million tonnes of greenhouse emissions (including CO2) is the maximum volume Romania is allowed to release in the air annually between 2008 and 2012, under the terms of the Kyoto Protocol. Last year, Romania’s carbon emissions were only 160 million tonnes. The central authorities could obtain up to 1.8 billion Euro in the transaction, which could be spent on the modernisation of the state-owned thermo power plants. Ukraine recently sold its right to release 30 million tonnes of CO2 for 300 million Euro to Japan which, together with Canada, face difficulties in reducing their carbon emissions.
