One billion-Euro hydro power plant closer
October 2009 - From the Print Edition
The President of the Cluj County Council Alin Tise has given the go-ahead for the one billion Euro-Tarnita-Lapustesti hydro power plant on the Somesul Cald River in Cluj County, providing it adheres to strict environmental rules.
Tise stated that the plant must grow “green curtains” around the new plant and flooded areas, to help build up a new ecosystem and reduce the visual impact of the energy facility.
“After the completion of these works, Hidroelectrica will make all the necessary steps to restore the land for agriculture or forests and to rebuild the area’s natural balance,” Tise said.
The total surface of land to be affected by this project spreads over 1.5 million sqm.
The Tarnita-Lapustesti plant has an installed power capacity of 500 MW and is necessary to rebalance the national energy system after the switching on of Cernavoda nuclear plant’s reactors 3 and 4, so that there is a variety of suppliers of energy
