Maternity hospital at centre of baby-death scandal risks closure
September 2010 - From the Print Edition
Giulesti Maternity Hospital in Bucharest risks closure after five babies died and another six were severely injured in a fire at the intensive care unit for premature births. High Court prosecutors have begun an investigation into the behaviour of the maternity staff, who are accused of manslaughter. Sanctions could go as far as closing down the hospital, according to Marius Iacob, head of the Prosecutor Office’s investigation department. The August fire was caused by the explosion of an air conditioning unit in a room with 11 newborns. Medical staff supposedly on call were celebrating the name-day of Saint Mary in a recreation room as the fire blazed for almost an hour.
