Giant auto-components maker mulls part-relocation

October 2009 - From the Print Edition

One of the largest employers in Romania’s car parts industry, Draexlmaier Group, is considering relocating part of its local production of wire harnesses from Romania to a cheaper country. The relocation option is due to the increasing labour costs in Romania, which are higher than competitor investment targets such as Ukraine, the Republic of Moldova, Tunisia and Egypt. “The higher labour costs in Romania must be compensated by using more technology-based production methods or doing engineering tasks,” says Ferdinand Zilcher, country manager at Draexlmaier Group Romania. The group employs 14,500 in Romania, a drop of 2,500 since last year
