Gazprom hints at Romanian South Stream branch

Russian oil and gas giant Gazprom appears to be favouring a passage through Romania for its gas pipeline project South Stream. Following the completion of a feasibility study, Gazprom and Romanian gas transmission company Transgaz “have found it worthwhile to further scrutinise the projected gas pipeline construction in Romania,” a Gazprom statement read. If this deal moves ahead it is likely that Romanian gas transmission company Transgaz could become a new partner in the project. South Stream would open a new gas route to southern EU markets for Russia gas across the Black Sea, in addition to the current route through Ukraine. However the EU favours the proposed Caspian Sea-Turkey-EU Nabucco project, as this diversifies the gas source away from a dependence on Russian hydrocarbons to central Asian republics.
