Accused of blackmail, MP refuses to resign from Parliament

Accused of blackmail by the National Anti-corruption Department (DNA), Liberal Democrat (PDL) MP Dan Pasat has resigned from his party, arguing that his personal problems have nothing to do with the party. Pasat however refuses to remove himself from Parliament, declaring his innocence, according to Hotnews. Last month President Traian Basescu stated that the PDL should exclude ex-PDL Minister Monica Iacob-Ridzi [who is accused of extorting funds] and Dan Pasat, if it wants to keep its credibility intact. He made this statement after the Parliament’s lower house – the Chamber of Deputies - failed to approve a request from the DNA to lift Pasat’s immunity. The request attracted 116 votes in favour and 34 against and would have needed at least 147 favourable votes to pass. The opposition parties to the PDL did not take part in the vote. The absence of a definitive decision on the guilt or innocence of Pasat and Iacob-Ridzi is a concern of the European Commission, which continues to monitor Romania’s efforts to tackle high-level graft.
