Tourism funding campaign probed

A parliamentary commission is investigating Elena Udrea, Minister of Tourism and member of the Democratic Liberal Party (PD-L), on how her Ministry spent cash on promotional campaigns for Romanian tourism. The 1.4 million Euro ‘Romania, Land of Choice’ campaign is now being broadcast on CNN and Eurosport TV to attract foreign tourists until the end of the year. Minister Udrea denies the allegations. The commission is headed by bitter rivals of Udrea, National Liberal Party member Ludovic Orban and Adriana Saftoiu, who allegedly gave up the position of counsellor of President Traian Basescu because of misunderstandings with Udrea, who was a fellow adviser at the time. Meanwhile Social Democratic (PSD) Minister of the Environment Nicolae Nemirschi is under investigation by a parliamentary commission because he allegedly did not respect the public acquisition law when granting a 0.5 million Euro contract through the Ministry to advertising agency Ars Advertising.
