Airbus and Tarom in joint push for Camelina bio-fuel development
Romanian airline Tarom and EADS-owned Airbus have kicked off a project to develop bio-kerosene jet-fuel from the Camelina plant for plantation, processing and production in Romania

The project aims to provide a bio-fuel made from Camelina with Spain’s Camelina Company Espana (CCE) as a renewable substitute to fossil-based jet fuel.
The project has chosen Camelina for its high energy potential, rotational crop qualities and its low water requirements.
Camelina is indigenous to Romania, grows between 30 and 90 cm and has pea-sized seed pods with tiny seeds that can produce around 40 per cent oil.
The consortium will work together with the Bucharest University of Agronomic Sciences and Veterinary Medicine’s Centre of Biotechnology (BIOTEHGEN) on the agricultural phase of the project regarding Camelina plantation, harvesting and oil production.
“This project brings together farmers, oil-refiners and an airline to spearhead the commercialisation of sustainable bio-fuel production,” said Paul Nash, Airbus Head of New Energies.
The next step is for experts to conduct a sustainability analysis to prove the viability of the project in Romania.
