State aid: handout or hand up?
State aid has long been a contentious issue, especially as Romania joined the EU, where its companies are expected to compete with firms from more advanced economies. While too much state aid risks distorting fair competition, too little can leave deprived regions and sectors languishing or lead to bankruptcies and mass layoffs.
