Romania's Schengen accession postponed again
April 2013 - From the Print Edition
Romania and Bulgaria's accession to the Schengen zone will be postponed again, agreed EU Member States' home affairs and justice ministers, at the Justice and Home Affairs (JHA) Council on March 7, according to Mediafax. The vast majority of Member States expressed their support for the two Balkan neighbors, but Germany, the Netherlands and Finland registered their opposition, citing aspects of the Cooperation and Verification Mechanism (CVM). "The Finnish Government admits that Romania has met the technical criteria for Schengen membership," said officials from the Embassy of Finland in Bucharest.
"However, when taking a decision on its position regarding the Schengen enlargement, Finland considers the overall situation. For this assessment, the information provided in the CVM reports of the European Commission regarding the rule of law and the fight against corruption is critical." German interior minister Hans-Peter Friedrich made a proposal to restrict the access of immigrants from the two EU countries by refusing them a visa after they have used the German social security system for two years , according to Novinite.com. However, other members of the Bundestag said that Germany should not restrict the access of skilled workers.
