Lufthansa grows on local market
April 2013 - From the Print Edition
Lufthansa carried about 770,000 Romanian passengers between Romania and the airline's German hubs (Frankfurt, Munich, Dusseldorf and Berlin) last year, a 12 percent increase on 2011. "Romania is constantly developing and we are more than happy to have, once again, such a record number in terms of passengers," said Ofer Kisch, Lufthansa Group regional director for Central Europe. "Due both to new routes and an above average employment rate, the Lufthansa Group developed very well."
The airline has implemented several strategies on the local market to boost passenger numbers, increasing the number of flights from Bucharest to Berlin and Frankfurt. From April 1 this year, seasonal Bucharest-Frankfurt flights and daily Sibiu-Munich services were reinstated. "These measures provide both advantageous flight times for Romanian passengers and a better connection with our global network of more than 250 destinations," said Patrick Artiel, general manager of Lufthansa passenger sales for Romania and the Republic of Moldova. Lufthansa will increase its fleet by 135 aircraft, worth more than EUR 17 billion, in the next five years. Last year, the airline had more than 120,000 employees and a 26 percent market share, with a EUR 28.7 billion turnover in 2011.
