Romania is a trustful ally and partner of the US, but it has to consolidate the rule of law and continue to fight against corruption. This was the main message conveyed by US Vice President Joe Biden during his visit to Bucharest, on May 21.
The US official arrived at the Henri Coanda International Airport on board Air Force Two and he was welcomed by Romania′s Foreign Minister Titus Corlatean. Biden′s next stop was at the 90th Air Base, where he was welcomed by Romania′s Defence Minister Mircea Dusa. In remarks to Romanian and US troops, Biden underscored that NATO nations never stand alone, and thanked Romanians for their support to NATO. On the second day of his visit, Biden was welcomed by President Traian Basescu at the Cotroceni Presidential Palace in Bucharest. After official talks, Biden and Basescu held a joint press conference. Later the same day, Biden was welcomed at Victoria Palace, the headquarters of Romania′s Government, by Prime Minister Victor Ponta. During the two day-visit, the US official conveyed messages about the tensions in the region generated by the situation in Ukraine, promising that the US will protect its NATO allies against aggression. At a joint press conference with Ponta, Biden said Romania can be a lynchpin that holds together the energy markets from the Black Sea to Central and Eastern Europe by upgrading its infrastructure, and the US can help with its unique expertise, if it is desired. He also underscored Romania′s commitment to play its part as the eastern frontier of NATO and the EU and to have independent justice.
