Romanians elected Klaus Iohannis their new president for the next five years

Christian Liberal Alliance candidate Klaus Iohannis achieved 54.50 percent of the vote in the second round of the presidential elections on Sunday while Prime Minister Victor Ponta, the candidate of the Social Democratic Party-National Union for Romanin Progress-Conservative Party alliance polled 45.49 percent, according to the data released by the Central Electoral Bureau (BEC) at 11 a.m. on Monday after centralizing the reports from 18,673 polling stations in Romania and abroad, accounting for 99.07 percent of the total and quoted by national newswire Agerpres.

According to biography, Klaus Iohannis was born on June 13, 1959 in the Transylvanian city of Sibiu, Iohannis being an ethnic German. In 1983, Iohannis graduated in 1983 from the Babes-Bolyai University in Cluj, where he studied Physics, he became a teacher of physics, an occupation he retained until 1997. Between 1997 and 1999 he worked as a Deputy General School Inspector of the Sibiu County and was promoted to head the inspectorate in 1999.

His political career began in 2000, when he has been elected to lead the mayorship in Sibiu and in 2007, Sibiu was European Capital of Culture alongside Luxembourg. In 2013, Iohannis joined the National Liberal Party and one year later, he agreed to submit his candidature to Romania's Presidency. Iohannis is fluent in English and natively speaks Romanian and German.
